Implication of James Rogers, CEO Duke Energy, article ‘How I did it’

It was a hard time for James Rogers when he became the CEO of an ailing PSI which is now referred to as Duke Energy. At the time when he came to lead the company he had a determination to listen to all of its stakeholders in order to revive the company. Contrary to his expectations, he faced a number of challenges provided by some of the stakeholders, especially the environmentalists, who had a skeptic view of the energy industry. They even posed a number of questions addressed to Rogers. For instance, they queried the commitment of CEO James Rogers on advocating for a future with low carbon, and yet his company was among one of the largest carbon (iv) oxide emitters in the United States at that time (Rogers 2011). It often happens so that, when people focus on achieving a number of goals, they face obstacles on their way from those who are supposed to help them in achieving success. This is clearly implied in the case of CEO Rogers when he sought collaboration with the environmentalist. They never saw any benefit which could come from a CEO of a company responsible for emission of carbon dioxide and others gases hazardous to the environment. Rogers, in turn, believed he had what it takes to unite the two rival sides, his company and the environmentalist. We should also have the same conviction in our everyday practices of acting on what we believe will work even though certain challenges appear in our way.

Prior to becoming CEO in the year 1988, James Rogers never thought that he was qualified to lead such a post. He never considered himself an environmentalist before because, at that time, he was a lawyer with an energy background. Thus, before he applied for the job interview, he developed a plan which he called ‘The 100 days of listening’. Through this, he set a target of meeting with as many stakeholders as possible in order to be able to identify a number of issues, set priorities as well as figure out who to trust in an effort of building and rebuilding relationships. This gave him a competitive advantage over other contestants who were more experienced in that industry as well as possessed adequate leadership experience. On the other hand, Rogers had an already prepared plan of acting and, thus, he was given the job (Rogers 2011). This fact has a significant implication in our lives; we frequently tend to shy away from great opportunities in life because we are convinced we will fail in achieving success. Just like Rogers, we need to develop a plan and focus on areas of importance concerning what one wants to achieve. Similar preparation will help us to be in the best situation possible as well as be ready to any task ahead.

As far as management is concerned, James Rogers attested that the members of the management team were older than he was and always advised him to avoid meeting with any of the environmentalists. This was because a number of their largest construction projects had been canceled because of them. The management rejected James Rogers’s proposal in a very pleasant and proper way; at one time he even decided to change his course. Despite that, James Rogers believed in the power of collaboration, in an effort of addressing a number of tough problems the company was facing; as a result, he decided to follow his instinct. At one point, James Rogers attested that, in order to control deal with the issue of carbon dioxide, smart public policy needed to be put in place; such actions would serve both the business and the society’s interest, he explained (Rogers 2011). This is a clear implication of a leader, as a true determined leader should be able to go with what he thinks is right. James Rogers believed in collaboration, and his belief was never affected by comments from the management’s team, even though they were older and more sophisticated than him. This means that we should never be intimidated by anybody the moment we set our goals and target in life. We should always focus on achieving our goals despite the challenges which appear in our way.

Relevance of Ethics in ones University Life as a Professional in Training

Most of the universities and organizations appear to be in the forefront of addressing the issue of ethics. It has been a common thing among the organizations and universities to embark on training in ethics in order to provide individuals with relevant skills for them to be able to make ethical decisions; such practice is popular both in the universities and organizations (Frisque et al. 2004). Most companies agree that the amount of training received by their employees has a direct impact on performance. It has been noted that ethical training is directly linked with the organization’s productivity as well as its global market competitiveness. Therefore, this is a clear indication of how it is relevant to equip students with knowledge regarding ethics, as well as ethical practices, in their preparation for their profession.

In order to enable individuals to make ethical decisions in one’s work place, universities have been seriously embarking on ethical training. Despite this effort, a number of unethical practices have been experienced in a number of learning institutions. For instance, in a research conducted in one of the higher institutions it was revealed that most of the faculty members had falsified research data (Couch & Dodd 2005). Therefore, ethics is a vital constituent in one’s university life; it is an effort of molding ethical personnel who appear to be responsible people in the society. If a student studies in an environment full of unethical practices, he or she will absorb negative experience and, hence, exhibit unethical behavior in his/her professional life. This shows how one’s university life needs to be ethically molded in preparation for any future working career.

Most people tend to have a belief that students ought to have learnt values, as well as ethics, long before entering college through families, schools, churches, and through interaction with the society members. On a number of occasions it has been argued that higher learning institutions are not able to produce morally corrupt students. According to Platts (2003), each student has an opportunity to develop according to his/her own competence, as well as trust; this will greatly assist in ensuring that professional ethics is cultivated among young people. When one is still studying, he/she is on a journey of building his/her professional life. As a professional, one is supposed to exhibit ethical issues in regard to one’s professionalism. This should have a foundation, which is laid when a student joins the university in order to pursue a course of a certain profession. This means ethical principles play a significant role in one’s university life, as a person will benefit from the acquired experience later. Thus, ethics should be an integral part of one’s university life.
