Authors are always influenced by some factors during their writing. Some do their writing because it is what their heart wants them to do, thus, they enjoy doing it. Their values and beliefs are also another factor which they use. Various authors write books for various purposes, and what always drives them to writing these books differ from one to another. Some people write, because it is a source of living, and others write, since they want to share out their thoughts with others. However, there are others who are driven both by political and social life experiences. What they underwent politically and socially is what makes them write. Maybe, memories that are in their mind cannot be erased and they keep on coming in mind, so these authors try to put the past back. An excellent example is Elie Wiesel, who has written various books, due to his life experience.

Elie Waisel was born on September 30th, 1928, in the small town of Sighet in Transylvania. It was a multi-dynamic region that had many speaking languages and religions. He was the third born child and had two sisters. He grew up in the town, and his family owned a grocery firm that operated in Germany, Hungary and Rome. His life was mainly in religious studies, regardless of his father who urged him to concentrate on Hebrew languages. His interests shifted to mystical folk tales. They lived in peace, but it was not for long, since they were enslaved by Nazis and were separated from mother and sister, when he was at the age of 15 years. He and his father suffered a lot, since they were enslaved and received beatings and hard work, and movement from camps. His father was not able to make it, since he was attacked by dysentery. The war ended, and Wiesel was managed to move to France and was lucky to meet his two elder sisters. There in France, his career of a journalist was facilitated by philosophy and French language studies in Sorbonne. As a professional journalist, he wrote for both French and Israel newspapers. He has been staying for ten years without writing on issues about the war because of the vow he had taken. However, this vow was broken after he was convinced to write about the war by Francois Mauriac. In 1955, he wrote a 900-page book titled “And the World kept silent”. This book was written mainly about his experiences in Yiddish, and its first publication was done in Argentina, but he was not lucky in convincing publishers to convert the book to the English language. That is why the sale was not acceptable even after the translation.

In his book, one finds out that his social life was what made him write the book. He was trying to understand faith in God. At the beginning of the book, one sees that his faith made him understand who God was, and this was what made him go through all experiences, while he was in Holocaust. However, as time went,  faith was lost, due to experiences that he witnessed after they were chased from the town. He had to be separated from his family members, and he remained with his father and had to undergo some much worse experiences. Wiesel through his faith in God was what made him soldier on, since there was nothing he could do but address his hope to God.

The faith suddenly fades away, since his every night prayers did not bear him any fruit, as his freedom was not achieved, and people were still dying. This made him stop praying; his faith was replaced by ego and even hope that his father would survive was not there anymore. He started to think only about himself, and at the end of the war he decided to go with other Germans. These memories of terror are  so awful that he cannot forget them, and that was what made him write the book. He is considered to have a different view about faith in God from experiences that he faced, just as in the Holy Bible from Job who had faith in God.

“Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed…….Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God himself. Never.”

From this quote, it is clear that he would not forget suffering that he had underwent, and this is what drove him to write the book, since it was talking about his experiences. His loss of faith can be seen in his quotes:

“Blessed is God’s name? Why, but why would I praise Him? Every fiber in me rebelled. Because He caused thousands of children to burn in His mass graves? Because he kept six crematoria working day and night, including Sabbath and the Holy days? Because in His great might, He had created Auschwitz Birkenau, Buna, and so many other factories of death? How could I say to Him : Blessed be Thou, Almighty, Master of the universe, who chose us among all nations  to be tortured day and night, to watch as our fathers, our mothers, our brothers, end up in the furnaces/ praised be Thy Holy Name, for having chosen us to be slaughtered on Throne altar?  ”

These words directly reflect on his experience, and are the basis of his loss of faith in God. These social issues are what made him write the book. He also tried to make the reader not forget the torture that Jews underwent.  In his story, he tries to point out that human being cannot survive without basic needs and that there is a reason to survive. For humans to survive, there must be something that drives them in their survival, and this can only be confirmed when they are put in a tough situation. The form of inhumanity that he faced also by losing his family members and witnessing the death of other people is a sense that made him write more.  Also, the book is written in the form of an autobiography, since it describes the life of the author during the imprisonment in the camp, since among those who were killed, he was able to survive; thus, he tries to show suffering that he went through and how he managed to find his own place. Considering this fact, there is a sympathetic view brought about that. He brings interest in to the book by using the suspense and a form of not giving up; this makes the reader want to read more about the book. The order of the book occurs in a systematic manner, by narrating occurrences of his social life, step by step. Since it is an autobiography, he points out what he believes to be true.

On the political influence, there was a war between ethnic groups, and this book is related to Hitler’s Holocaust war that was in regards to the destruction of the people, due to cultural reasons. The war was against Jews, and Hitler did all he could to destroy Jews. Children were not spared, and they underwent some political hardship, an Elie was one of them. One can see the author lying about his age, so as to escape death, since his age mates were killed, but instead of being killed, he was submitted to hard labor. In Holocaust, there were various horrific events in human history. Hitler, the German leader, carried out the oppression on Jews. This political war was witnessed by Elie, and he uses the political experience to explain his suffering that he underwent. He writes the book to show people what happened during Holocaust; and this information will help to control the reoccurrence of this incident. His innocence is lost, since he witnesses such horrific torture that a human being did not deserve on the issue of the lost soul. It can be is seen when his father tries to call on him for help, but he keeps on ignoring him. All in all, he is even happy about the death of his father, as he was sure he is going to die.

Wiesel also wrote a book regarding to his social life. In the book “All rivers run to the sea” he wrote about his life memories. His books talk about love, faith and trust. The book talks about his childhood up to the 1960s. His book is described at ten parts by looking at first at his is speaking about his childhood, and ends with the present life in Jerusalem. He describes his boyhood, and tries to talk about Jewish faith and how the political condition was the same at first, but later deteriorated. He also talks about how he was released from the camp, and how he tried to acquire a job. This book also talks about his love life and how he rediscovers himself. In this book, he tries to show problems that people in Holocaust were facing. He also tries to remember how his family was keen, when it came to Jewish religion practices before the arrival of Nazis. He also describes how the ghetto arose, and the torture people faced.  Elie also tries to recall how his sister and mother were separated from him. This state’s hoe the life he underwent made him write this book, since it was real life occurrences that happened to his. The other issue that he tries to relate to is his view of God, since he could not imagine that God would allow people to undergo what people went through during Holocaust. This view only comes because of what he went through. If all this had not happened, his criticism to God would not have been there. Elie goes on telling us about how he came to be a journalist, since he could have been able to walk around and have a talk with elders. His writing style was influenced by the social life that he underwent. His life challenges put him in a state of bitterness that made him pose questions on whether the society is a better place for the human being’s development.

He became a political activist and had to make some moves to the Soviet Union in the year 1965, due to experiences he faced. What he experienced there he was able to express through writing the book ‘The Jews of silence’; he used the book to convey problems of the oppressed people in the Soviet Union. In the book, he raised the issue of those, who were in political wars, both in Sudan and Kurds. His main aim of going to Soviet Union was coming back with the report regarding Jews. His report was aimed to show if what he said was true.  Ellie goes further to write “Dawn”. This is a novel that takes place in Palestine and occurs after the Second World War. The main character of the book is a young man who is a terrorist in the Jewish group. This character has a duty to send away English forces. However, he was arrested by Americans and lost his parents.  After his release, he goes to France, since he is sure that his parents were dead. From this book, Elie gives out an encounter of his life, but uses a different path to show this.

Through the social life, Elie found what made him to write books, such as “Night” and “Dawn”. These books are relations to how he lived and experiences he underwent. The political violence that occurred in his country is what triggers him to write novels.
