People normally experience their own fair share of blues and sad moments; however, this cannot be compared with depression. Depression is a persistent feeling of sadness; therefore, it cannot be compared with everyday blues. Depression is a sadness disease that deprives us the joy and happiness in life. Over 5% of the American population is suffering from depression; therefore, we cannot be oblivious about it. Mood fluctuations happen only for a short while.
Depression is a disorder marked by pervasive sadness, dejection, hopelessness, feelings of apathy and low self worth. Depression is a treatable medical condition. For depression to be considered clinical, its symptoms must match the criteria in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Symptoms of clinical depression are; depressed mood, loss of interest in activities, weight loss or gain, change in sleep patterns, feelings of fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt and suicidal thoughts. Though people have different reasons behind their depression, depression causes noticeable changes in their lives.
Some causes of depression are family history of depression, difficulties in coping to a situation, a negative outlook of things, grief, among others. It is important to differentiate the symptoms of clinical depression from normal stress so that the depressed person can seek treatment. Major depression can lead to suicide, therefore it should be treated at is early stages. Treatment for depression comprises of medical or talking treatment. Both ways are effective. Getting to know these symptoms will make a person work on a way of getting better. Depression is an illness that traps a person; it limits somebody from doing what they like because they live in an emotional trap. Getting to know the symptoms is the first step towards recovery; therefore, people should be able to differentiate the difference between everyday blues and depression.
