During the period of the Great Depression women’s place in society changed. Women began to get traditionally men's jobs during the war.
According to the earlier established rules, women were the defenders of morality and behaved appropriately. Young girls had to maintain innocence and wait for their love. However, the Great Depression broke the traditional rules.
Smoking cigarettes has become open and defiant unlike drinking. It was only the beginning of a turn in behavior and moral principles which influenced women of every age.
The Great Depression did not only change the morals and manners of women but ruined the traditional stereotypes about them. It was impossible for this generation to be unchanged when everything was over. The alteration was also accelerated by the growing of women’s independence and self-confidence. Women became interested in politics, however, they were not crowned with success. Even nowadays, women are rare occurrence in politics.
The conspicuous changes also concerned women's dressing and appearance. Besides wearing short and tight clothes, women were keen on short hair.
Change in manners was followed by an inescapable change in moral codes. Young people began to get involved into sexual relations at a tender age. Blessed innocence and shyness were not principles for following anymore.
In conclusion, it is worth to say that the time of 1920 was uneasy, but it brought the cardinal changes in woman's life. Moreover, this time has become the motive force for women on the way of struggle for equal rights with men.
Without doubt, women took an important part in military service in all times. However, this role has changed following the changes in women's duties. If during World War II women, who served in the military, did traditional "female" jobs (typists, clerks, nurses, and mail sorters), afterward they started to work equally with men. During World War II, the position of women was indirectly connected with military service. Women were not allowed to take part in hostilities, but their duties often brought them close to the front lines. The major roles played by women in World War II were household duties and medical care.
Nowadays, there are more women in combat zones, and their positions are directly related to combat. They fight the same as men, fire a weapon and join the army. Having become the first female four-star general of the U.S. Army in 2008, Ann Dunwoody made a remarkable event for both women and the military.
It should be noted that women have broken the strong barrier and removed all obstacles to serve in the military. Each year, more and more women join different branches of military service, showing that they are not the weaker sex anymore.
